Woodlice were reared in laboratory in the environmental climate of the city of Curitiba, Brazil, with the purpose of getting to know the process of formation of oostegites. Two kinds of cultivation were adopted: natural populations to be controlled were kept in small glass aquariums resembling the natural environment; and, new-bom woodlice were raised each one isolated in small plastic receptacles, with a special diet until two years old or over. When adults, after recognizing their sexes, males and females were put together to copulate during one or more days, and some of the females were fertilized. After 30 days, the fertilized females realized ecdise and acquired oostegites. The complete process (copulation, fecundation, incubation and birth) occurred...

An assemblage of terrestrial isopods (Crustacea) in southern Brazil and its contribution to leaf litter processing Zoologia
Quadros,Aline F.; Araujo,Paula B..
We present an assemblage of terrestrial isopods in Parque Estadual de Itapuã, southern Brazil, and estimate the contribution of two species to the leaf litter processing. After one year of sampling, we obtained 3748 individuals of six species and four eco-morphologic groups (in order of abundance): Balloniscus glaber Araujo & Zardo, 1995, Atlantoscia floridana (van Name, 1940), Pseudodiploexochus tabularis (Giambiagi de Calabrese, 1939), Trichorhina sp., Alboscia itapuensis Araujo & Quadros, 2005 and Novamundoniscus gracilis Lopes & Araujo, 2003. Total monthly density corresponded to 368 individuals per square meter. The species A. itapuensis and N. gracilis represented less than 1% of total individuals. All the others showed...

Aspects of the evolution and biogeography of stygobiontic Isopoda (Crustacea: Peracarida) Naturalis
Wägele, Johann-Wolfgang.
The evolution of the stygobiontic isopods is discussed correlating the phylogenetic system with biogeography. All stygobiontic isopods probably are derived from remote marine ancestors. The colonization of subterranean aquatic biotopes occurred in two ways: (1) via the coastal groundwater in the case of the Microparasellidae, Gnathostenetroididae, Stenetriidae, and in Cyathura (Stygocyathura), (2) in most families, however, via epigean freshwater ancestors. Ancient freshwater isopods that must already have existed before the Cretaceous and whose stygobiontic phylogenetic lines partly must have existed before the opening of the Atlantic are the Aselloidea, Calabozoida, Phreatoicidea, and probably also the Protojaniridae. In the course of Cretaceous and...

Lopes,Elis R. C.; Blasina,Juliana R.; Dumont,Luiz F. C.; D'Incao,Fernando.

Checklist of the terrestrial isopods of the new world (Crustacea, Isopoda, Oniscidea) Zoologia
Leistikow,Andreas; Wägele,Johann Wolfgang.
A check-list of all the American Oniscidea known to the authors and their quotation in literature is presented. The species account comprises notes on species' distribution and a revised synonymy. As far as possible comments on taxonomic problems are given. The species are ascribed to the families which are commonly recognised, despite many of them are paraphyletic constructions. This check-list should support the work of both ecologists and taxonomist when dealing with New World Oniscidea.

Community structures of soil animals and survival of land snails on an island of the Ogasawara Archipelago PAB
Hasegawa,Motohiro; Sugiura,Shinji; Ito,Masamichi T.; Yamaki,Aska; Hamaguchi,Keiko; Kishimoto,Toshio; Okochi,Isamu.
On Chichijima, one of the Ogasawara (Bonin) Islands located in the Western Pacific Ocean, land snails have declined, the suggested cause being predation pressure by an invasive flatworm (Platydemus manokwari). Soil fauna were investigated in areas where the snail survives, and where it has become extinct. Much of the fauna, dominated by introduced earthworms and ants, was undiminished, however, one undescribed but endemic carabid (Badister sp.), which selectively feeds on land snails, was absent in snail-extinct areas. The invasive flatworm P. manokwari has been reported to feed also on the carcasses of earthworms, as well as on live snails, and is therefore expected to occur in most parts of Chichijima Island. Among other groups, the density of isopods...

Cylisticus convexus, een in Nederland zeldzame synantrope landpissebed (Crustacea: Isopoda: Oniscoidea) Naturalis
Berg, M.P.; Wijnhoven, H.; Tempelman, D..
Cylisticus convexus, a rare synanthropic woodlouse in The Netherlands (Crustacea: Isopoda: Cylisticidae) Until recently, the occurrence of Cylisticus convexus (De Geer, 1778) in the Netherlands was uncertain. The only certain old record dates from March 1927, when the species was collected at the coal-shed of the Zoological Museum at Amsterdam. During the last years, two specimens have been collected on semi-natural sites. Both were found on a dike, one near Everdingen, in the province of Gelderland, and one near Ritthem, in the province of Zeeland. These are the first records of C. convexus in the field. Yet the species certainly is very rare in The Netherlands. The most important morphological characteristics of the species are described and...

Berg, M.P.; Noordwijk, C.G.E. van; Kruithof , A..
Daar is nu verandering in gekomen.

Berg, M.P.; Kroon, A..
The influence of recent inundations on the distribution pattern of the isopod Eluma purpurascens in the province of Zeeland (Crustacea: Isopoda: Oniscoidea) Small scale mapping of Eluma purpurascens Budde-Lund, 1885 in the province of Zeeland revealed a remarkable distribution pattern. The species proved to be absent in parts which have been inundated during and after the second world war. This study shows that for the interpretation of distribution patterns the history of the study area should be considered.

Faasse, M.A.; Ligthart, A.H.M..

Berg, M.P.; Dias, A.T.C.; Oosten, R. van; Bellone, D..

Tempelman, D.; Berg, M.P..
Eluma purpurascens, new for the Dutch fauna (Crustacea: Isopoda: Oniscoidea). The first Dutch specimen of Eluma purpurascens was found on 29 April 1994 on the Kaloot, east of Vlissingen, in the south-western province of Zeeland. One year later the species proved to be locally common along the southern coast of the Oosterschelde and three years later several hundreds mature and immature specimens were found along the southern coast of the Westerschelde and along the coast of the North Sea. So far, the species has not been found on the isle of Schouwen-Duiveland. It seems to be almost absent inland although not all sites where this species might occur have yet been visited. In this paper the morphology of Eluma purpurascens is illustrated, and some notes on...
